Ever Thankful!
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, we want to take a moment to express our appreciation for all the incredibly special people in our lives. TWC wouldn't exist without our instructors who give so lovingly of their expertise and enthusiasm for writing, without our students who embrace creativity with such verve, without our friends who cheer us on every step of the way, and without our families who give us so much love and support.

We are grateful for every single one of you.

The last few weeks have been all about business at TWC's home office - the business of publishing, that is.  As Judith polishes off her draft for her agent, she took time out to read up on what's new in the publishing world.  Read her review of The Business of Being a Writer (Jane Friedman’s book, and the actual thing…!)

Meanwhile, Michelle has been weighing her options to publish her latest historical novel, Beyond the Ghetto Gates.  She shares her challenges choosing the right publishing path in Three Strikes and You’re Out – Making My Publishing Decision.

COMMUNITY Publications and Literary Achievements

NEW PUBLICATIONS BY OUR AUTHOR-INSTRUCTORS

Steph Auteri fit in time while promoting her recently published memoir, A Dirty Word, to consider "If You Loved that B Horror Flick, Read This Novel" on Book Riot

Congratulations to Chris Kapp for her two most recent publications: "Reproductive History" in The Forge and "Haleakala" in Pitthead Chapel.

Laurie Lico Albanese's most recent publication is in considerable: "What Really Happens When the Kids Leave Home."

Lisa Romeo, fresh off her promotional tour, summed up her publishing experiences as a guest blogger on the Nonfiction Authors Association: "Publishing with a Small Traditional or University Press: When It Might be Right for You and Your Book."

And...as noted in the blog post above, TWC Director Michelle Cameron's historical novel, Beyond the Ghetto Gates, will be published by SheWrites Press in spring 2020!

NEW PUBLICATIONS BY OUR STUDENTS

Congratulations to TWC student Kim Harwanko and members of her Between Friends Book Group, who were featured on  on Pulse of the People on CNN. In addition to the interview, the ladies used the opportunity to promote their recently published co-written novel, Novel Women. The image is Kim's family room, where the segment was filmed.
LOCAL EVENTS and COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES

Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards: Call for Entries!

Every year since 2013, The Writers Circle has sponsored teen writers entering the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.  This national competition draws tens of thousands of submissions and bestows both regional and national honors.  We’ve been thrilled to cheer for our  four national gold medalists in the five years our students have participated. (2018 winners Prisha Mehta and Olivia Bishop shown left with their well-deserved medals.)

This year’s submission deadline is December 5. Full information is available on the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards website, including how to enter and specific details about submission requirements for the New Jersey Writing Region.  Instructions about working with TWC instructors on student submission is available on our homepage.  And we'll remind our teen students when we start the fall session on Sept. 29.

So, teens, we’re challenging each of you to GET WRITING!

TWC's First Creative Writing Contest for Kids!

On the theme: PORTALS

Imagine opening a passage to another dimension! Or discovering secrets on the other side of an attic door! Or simply walking into a room where something unexpected happens. Your short story, poem, or creative nonfiction essay about “Portals” can be fantastical, realistic, dystopian, or just plain amazing. We’re looking for ideas that stun us, make us smile, make us cry – and are exquisitely written.

TWO Sections: 3rd-5th graders and 6th-8th graders

PRIZES

Plus, the winners’ writing will be featured on The Writers Circle’s blog!

Submit your writing electronically to mbecker@writerscircleworkshops.com. No more than 1200 words.  Pieces MUST be typed into the body of the email.  (No scanned notebook pages or attachments, please.) Include the author’s grade, but not their name. Judging will be done “blind” by TWC Directors Judith Lindbergh and Michelle Cameron. Limit: one piece per writer.  Send your very best!

Submissions are welcome from October 31-November 15. Winners will be announced on December 14.
