We're BACK!
Michelle at the Globe
Would you believe our last newsletter went out back in May? Per usual, our summer was packed! The Summer Creative Writing Intensives, WordSMASH mini-camps, and our weekly classes filled every breath - until we finally headed off for a break ourselves. Judith used the time to finish the second draft of her novel while Michelle set out for the UK, glorying in finally visiting the Globe Theatre with her verse novel, In the Shadow of the Globe, in hand.

But now we're back, ready and raring to go with some great plans for the fall ahead.

Summer may be OVER, but the 2018 Intensives live on in words and pictures.

Check out our 2018 Summer Intensive Photo Recap including an inside look at our fabulous teens in class and out. This summer, as always, was filled with creativity, companionship, tons of laughter, plus loads of literary fun.

And be sure to read these young writers' impressive words in the latest issue of The Writers Circle Journal - including amazing prose and stunning spoken word and poetry!

Despite our busy summer, we managed to post a few valuable articles to our blog:

Lisa Romeo talks about fairness in writing memoir in Writing About Family

Judith recapped our June Speaker Series Event, Turn from Writer to Marketer

And Michelle recounted how her novel finally got some interest, even while her agent dumped her. (For the curious, she's still waiting to hear back from the small press mentioned in this post.)

COMMUNITY Publications and Literary Achievements

NEW PUBLICATIONS BY OUR AUTHOR-INSTRUCTORS

We congratulate Steph Auteri on the upcoming publication of her memoir, A Dirty Word. Steph has two book launches, the first at YogaCentric, in Clinton, NJ on Oct. 14 and she'll be in conversation with Emily Nagoski at Watchung Booksellers, Montclair, NJ on Oct. 167.  Come to either, or BOTH, and cheer her on!

Lisa Romeo is returning to teach after a season of promoting her memoir, Starting From Goodbye. She's been an example to us all in her promotional efforts. We can't include them all, but here are a few of the most important:

NEW PUBLICATIONS BY OUR STUDENTS

Novel Women
Congratulations to TWC student Kim Harwanko and her four co-authors for publishing Novel Women, a book about a book club (by a book club)! Michelle and members of Kim's Novel Continuum class attended the book launch this past spring.

Joanne DeSimone recently published a new essay, "On Reminding Our Kids to be Kind," in Motherwell.

Congratulations to Margaret Meyers, whose short essay landed in the coveted Readers Write column in the June 2018 print-only issue of The Sun. Her essay about venturing out socially in the early stages of widowhood was written in response to the theme, "Odd Man Out."

Kathleen Noland won the 2018 Senior Citizen Legacies Writing Contest, for her narrative essay, "Lullaby for My Friend." The contest was sponsored by the Essex County Division of Senior Services. Kathleen's essay--about a friend suffering from Alzheimer's--grew out of work she developed in a Lisa Romeo's Creative Nonfiction class in Montclair.

TWC teen Jake S. won the New Jersey Junior Classical League Convention poetry contest with his poem, “Bound.”

Finally, TWC Teen, Prisha M., has two recent publications - her flash piece, "Wind Ridden" was accepted by Asymmetry, and "The Note" was published by the Ginsoko Literary Journal.
