Writing a college essay can be a highly stressful part of the application process, especially for students who don't consider themselves "good writers." While a little stress can motivate and energize, too much can turn this necessary task into paralyzing agony.

This workshop, consisting of two sessions held one day apart, will guide students toward a draft of their college essays while introducing stress reduction techniques that will ease them through the college application process.

Is your writing living alone in your computer or notebook? Is it time to send it into the world? If you’re unsure how to navigate the often confusing process of publication, this workshop is the kick start you need.

You will learn all about submitting your short stories, essays, creative nonfiction, poems, and articles to print and online publications, websites, literary journals, and contests. We'll cover research and targeting the best venues for your writing; contacting and following up with editors; ins and outs of simultaneous submissions; and evaluating contests.

We'll also cover the basics of book publishing—from how to research agents (and publishers who will take un-agented work) to what goes into query letters, synopses, and proposals.

Armed with plenty of examples, a boatload of resources, and your own target list for one or more of your pieces, you'll leave the workshop with the confidence to step into the submission game.
